Frequently Asked Questions

Which cameras work with Theta?

Sony Alpha bodies that support smartphone connection, including α1 II, α7R VI and α7 V. Theta is not affiliated with or endorsed by Sony Corporation.

How do I pair my camera?

  1. If the camera is paired with Sony’s Creators’ App, remove that pairing first, in the camera and in that app.
  2. On the camera, open MENU › Network › Bluetooth › Pairing (on older bodies: Network › Smartphone Connection › Pairing).
  3. Open Theta with the camera nearby. When your camera appears, tap Connect.
  4. Allow the prompts that follow: Bluetooth, joining the camera’s Wi-Fi, Local Network, and adding to Photos. The camera may also ask you to confirm on its screen.

After that, there is nothing to tap: open Theta with the camera on, and new photos start arriving.

Why does my iPhone join the camera’s Wi-Fi?

Bluetooth is only used to wake the camera and switch on its Wi-Fi. Full-resolution files are far too large for Bluetooth, so Theta joins the camera’s own Wi-Fi network to copy them, using an encrypted (SSH) connection.

What do “Bring all” and “Picks only” do?

  • Bring all (on the expanded camera card) brings everything on the card that isn’t on your iPhone yet.
  • Bring: All new (the default, in the Camera sheet) brings each new frame automatically.
  • Bring: Picks only brings only the frames you rated or protected on the camera.

To open the Camera sheet, tap ••• on the camera card, or tap the card and then Camera.

What do the RAW options do?

  • Paired (default): RAW + JPEG land in Photos as a single photo, with the JPEG shown and the RAW kept with it.
  • JPEG only: the JPEG comes across and the RAW file stays on the card.
  • RAW only: just the RAW file.

Where do my photos go?

Straight into your Photos library, as full-resolution originals. Theta keeps no separate gallery and uploads nothing. The files stay on your camera’s card too: Theta never deletes anything there.

What is free, and what does Theta Pro add?

Theta is free with one camera, including auto-bring and RAW + JPEG pairing. Theta Pro is for more than one camera: every body you own, each with its own reel. It is $19.99 a year with a 3-day free trial for new subscribers, and renews automatically unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Manage or cancel it in Settings › Apple Account › Subscriptions.

How do I restore Theta Pro?

Tap ••• on the camera card to open the Camera sheet, then tap “Restore”. Make sure you’re signed in with the same Apple Account you used for the original purchase.

Troubleshooting

The camera doesn’t wake or shows as asleep

  • Make sure the camera is switched on, has battery, and is within a few meters of your iPhone.
  • Check that Bluetooth is on in the camera: MENU › Network › Bluetooth › Bluetooth Function (older bodies: Network › Smartphone Connection).
  • Check that Bluetooth is on for your iPhone and allowed for Theta in Settings.
  • If it still doesn’t answer, turn the camera off and on again, then reopen Theta.

Theta couldn’t join the camera’s Wi-Fi

  • Tap Retry on the camera card. Keep Theta open while it joins: iOS only joins while the app is on screen.
  • Move closer to the camera, and close other camera apps that may be connected to it.
  • If you declined the Wi-Fi prompt, or it keeps failing, forget the camera in the Camera sheet and pair it again.

“Local network access is off”

Theta needs Local Network access to talk to your camera over its Wi-Fi. Turn it on in Settings › Privacy & Security › Local Network › Theta, or tap Settings on the camera card.

Photos aren’t saving

Theta needs permission to add to Photos. Turn it on in Settings › Apps › Theta › Photos. Until then, your frames are safe on the card.

“No card in the camera”

Insert a memory card and turn the camera on again. If the camera has two slots, Theta reads both.

Does Theta upload my photos?

No. There is no account and no server: photos go from your camera to your Photos library and nowhere else. Read our Privacy Policy for full details.
